Below are stories that have been sent to me to remember the sometimes great/sometimes challenging times we had aboard USS Ethan Allen (SSBN 608). I do not authenticate the stories. I just believe they are worth passing along.

Dear Gitch and friends:

I am really sorry I am not able to attend the reunion this weekend. I expected to but my dear brother, a surface sailor, was recently downgraded to terminal for a brain tumor and I am a primary caregiver to him.

In any event I have a story to tell you. When I left the E. Allen in 1969 I took an Ensign Jack and had it hanging somewhere in my house ever since. Just last month I asked a friend who sails a 35 foot sailboat out of Noank, Conn. to fly this flag one more time over the salt water. He put it on the top of his mast and one weekend in august, when returning from Long Island the wind was pushing 30 knots. As he was coming in two submarines were leaving Groton. Just as they passed he heard a snap and looked up and the flag broke in two allowing a 3 foot section to fly away into the sea. It was spooky because it was like the 608 gave one more salute to its sister boats. I had goose bumps when Jim told me this story. Jim is an old Coasty.
