Below are stories that have been sent to me to remember the sometimes great/sometimes challenging times we had aboard USS Ethan Allen (SSBN 608).  I do not authenticate the stories.  I just believe they are worth passing along.

Please forward all stories to ssbn608@ssbn608.org

These two stories are both from Charles W. Everet

SMOKE OUT

Before one of the cruises I made between 1962-1965 a lot of the guys on the Blue Crew decided to quit smoking.  The isolation of a two month cruise was one sure fire way to quit so they chose not to order sea stores. As the weeks went by, more and more of the reformers broke down and started bumming cigarettes. It was pitiful to see guys so desperate that they were emptying the butt kits & stripping and re-rolling the used butts. Those of us who didn't join the crusade took pity and as the cruise neared the end we were all running out of smokes. My supply was replenished by one of the cooks who had his sea stores but quit on sheer will power.

NORWEGIAN TANKER

I was standing a quiet watch at the navigation console just aft of the CON. It was a quiet watch. We were logging readings on the SINS console and fighting the boredom by swapping sea stories. On the other side of the curtain we could hear activity in the CON as the ship started going up for a radio check. The curtain between the NAV Center and Con muffled sounds so we didn't make out the phrase "TAKE HER DOWN DEEP AND FAST!" until after the actions that followed.... The Ship began what became an extreme down angle....The 1MC announced "COLLISION PORT SIDE AFT!" and I suddenly found myself securing the watertight door between the Nav Center and Missile Compartment...We hit with a tremendous BANG! and the sharp down angle continued...As thoughts of going to the bottom went through my head we began to level out and soon the words (never sounded sweeter) "SURFACE, SURFACE, SURFACE!" wrang out over the 1MC...Meanwhile, back in the States sometime latter, my wife bolted upright in the bed...answered the phone and before the caller (Don Anderson's wife) could speak asked "Are they alright?". We made it and now I'm a Father & Grandfather!
